Washington Square takes place in New York in the 1870s. Catherine, the 26-year-old daughter of a wealthy physician, Dr. Sloper, is homely, inexperienced, naive, socially awkward, and accident-prone. She is an unlikely candidate for a suitor, but he appears in the person of Morris Townsend, a handsome, charismatic, unemployed young man. The story unfolds as the viewer wonders if Morris really loves Catherine or if he’s after her inheritance. Her controlling father believes the later and proceeds accordingly. This is a delightful period piece of the mid-19th century with wonderful costumes and homes. Jennifer Garner’s part in this movie as Marian Almond is very small.
